In 1993 Daksha Desai and her husband Suketu Desai started at small catering service from their home in Sunnyvale. They provided the kind of home-style, authentic Indian food that the H-1 bachelors of that time craved. Quickly, their business grew and Daksha became “Aunty” for many Indian families that missed the taste of back home. In 1998 Daksha and Suketu opened their restaurant in Mountain View, naming it after their two daughters (Rutuja and Radhika) and Daksha’s initials. Deedee’s turned out to be a flourishing restaurant that specialized in authentic, healthy, vegetarian buffet and chaat. As demand from the neighboring software companies grew, deedee’s expanded from a small four table fast food joint to a much larger Indian grocery and restaurant. The end of 2007 brought many changes and struggles for the Desai family. The landlord at their Mountain View location did not renew their lease, or the leases of the several other stores in that plaza, as he wished to build apartments on his land. Slowly all the other businesses left and deedee’s was the only one standing strong in the midst of a completely deserted plaza. Fortunately, loyal customers still frequented the isolated restaurant and helped to keep the hopes and morale high of the Desai family. Finally, in October of 2007 Daksha found a new building at 2118 Middlefield Rd. in Mountain View where she wanted to relocate her business. The location was ideal as it was close to the previous restaurant and would be convenient for deedee’s patrons. Unfortunately, after a long and hard struggle with the city of Mountain View, the Desai’s were forced to abandon their dream of relocating deedee’s to the new Middlefield location. Next, the family chose another site in Mountain View at 275 Moffett Blvd, as Daksha maintained that she would not move away from the loving customers who had supported her during her troubling times. This time the city was consulted extensively before the lease was signed and the family was assured that the business license would be permitted by the city. However, once again, the city of Mountain View stalled and eventually halted the progress of deedee’s. Due to many small technicalities like number of parking spaces being short by one, deedee’s could not be opened for business. After 8 months of long frustrating battles and concessions with the city, the Desai family finally conceded to moving to a new location outside of Mountain View. Today, deedee’s is located at 341 Lafayette St. in Santa Clara. Our new building is right next to the Santa Clara University campus and highway 880. This convenient location has done well for us, however we are still experiencing some difficulties reaching the height we were once at after an 8 month hiatus. Many of our customers from Mountain View have continued to patronize our restaurant on the weekends and still enjoy the home cooked taste of the buffet and chaat items. This history of deedee’s would not be complete without the mention of our amazing staff that has been through it all with us. Karam Kaur, has been cooking our authentic Gujarati food to such perfection over these past 11 years that many of our customers are astonished to find that she is actually Punjabi. Her generous heart and warm smile have welcomed many customers to a tasty and nutritious meal, even when they walk in after closing. Because of this compassionate disposition Karam Kaur is known as “Aunty” to most. But even Karma Aunty could not prepare all the fresh food that deedee’s has to offer on her own. She depends on her most assiduous assistants, Maria and Valeria. Our family would never be complete without the presence of these three extremely hardworking and kindhearted people. Deedee’s now specializes not only healthy vegetarian fare, but also takes pride in its authentic regional styles, particularly its Gujarati menu, which includes everything from Undhiu to Kichadi to Shrikhand and Puri. Recently we have added an authentic Gujarati and Kathiawadi experience where we serve our customers at the table for dinner on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. On the weekends we continue to provide a regional buffet which includes three different chaat items. For our Santa Clara University and San Jose State students we offer a rice bowl for just $2.99 and combos starting at only $3.99. Come join us at our new Santa Clara location for the same great taste with a few new touches!
